The Do’s and Don’ts of Taking Your Dog Swimming

Water, sunshine, and wagging tails are pure happiness for many dogs. If you love admiring your dog paddle, splash, or even just dip their paws, swimming can be a great way for your dogs to burn some energy, stay cool, and have some splashing fun! At The Boop Story, we aim to celebrate the spirit of adventure, which is why every moment with your dog deserves to be safe, enjoyable, and full of love. Before you dive in (literally), it’s good to know what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to taking your dog swimming. Whether you are planning a dip in a private pool, a calm lake, or a pet-friendly beach, these do’s and don’ts will help you make the experience memorable for both you and your dog.

DO: Introduce Water Gradually and Safely

Not every dog is born a swimmer. Let your furry friend start slow and explore shallow water first — let them dip their paws, sniff around the edge, and get used to the feeling. Use toys or treats to make the first few dips fun and positive. This kind of gentle introduction helps build confidence and creates a positive association with water.  If this is your dog’s first time swimming, consider using a well-fitted dog life jacket for extra buoyancy and safety — especially helpful for small breeds or dogs with shorter legs.

DON’T: Force Your Dog Into Water They’re Not Comfortable With

The most important thing while taking your dog swimming is to keep an eye on them and understand their cues. If your dog is hesitant, shivering, or trying to back away – don’t push or force them into the water. This will cause panic, fear, or worse, a negative association with water that may last. Some days never take to swimming, and that’s completely okay. The goal is for them to have fun, be comfortable, and not stress. Also, avoid letting your dog swim right after a heavy meal. Like us, digesting food and swimming don’t mix well for dogs either. Waiting for a short while before jumping into the water keeps things safe and comfortable.

DO: Choose Safe Water Spots & Keep Watch

Before letting your dog enter any body of water, always check the water’s quality and conditions. Watch for strong currents, rough waves, murky or stagnant water, hidden objects that may cause injury, and contaminated water. Dogs will have the most fun swimming in clean and calm water. Examples of clean and calm water include swimming pools, calm lakes, and pet-friendly beaches that have gentle shorelines. Once in the water, always supervise. Even good swimmers can tire or panic. Keep sessions short, watch for signs of fatigue (slow paddling, heavy panting), and be ready to help them out if needed.

DON’T: Let Your Dog Drink Pool, Sea, or Stagnant Water

Salt water, chlorinated pool water, or natural water bodies can contain irritants, salt, chlorine, bacteria, or even toxins (in lakes/ponds). Allowing a dog to drink freely can cause stomach issues, dehydration, or worse.  Always carry fresh drinking water for your dog — especially on hot or long water-play days.

DO: Rinse, Dry & Care After Swim Time

After swimming, rinse off your dog with fresh water — especially if they were in a pool or sea. Chlorine, salt, or lake pollutants can irritate the skin or coat. Rinsing helps to prevent dryness or itching. Dry them properly, especially dogs with floppy ears— water trapped inside can lead to ear infections or irritation. This little aftercare step makes a big difference for their overall comfort and hygiene.

Make Water Time a Shared, Safe Adventure

Swimming can become one of those unforgettable experiences you share with your dog: splashing paws, bright eyes, wagging tails, and pure joy. It is a great way to bond with your dog and have some fun together, whether you are just going for a dip or splashing around for hours on end. Following these do’s and don’ts will help make sure your water adventures with your dog stay safe, fun, and memorable. At the Boop Story, we always strive to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for you and your dog, whether you are on land or in water. If you ever plan a pool day, a vet-approved water trip, or just want to explore safe water-play options, we’re all in. Because for us, every bark, splash, and pant is part of the story — and we want yours to be a beautiful, safe one.
